Tritonia (flame freesia) is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family. They are naturally distributed across southern Africa, with a high concentration of species in Cape Province of western South Africa. The genus is closely related to the genus Ixia.

Tritonia are small bulbous plants up to 80 cm, that appear in great numbers in spring. The leaves are fan-shaped. The flowers are shades of yellow, orange or brown, sweet-smelling, and give off a very strong fragrance, especially at night. They are not grazed.  

Tritonia Planting

  • Plant Tritonia bulbs in early winter or late summer
  • Plant the bulbs in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun or partial shade
  • Before planting, loosen the soil and add compost in the soil to increase its fertility
  • Plant the bulbs 2 inches deep and a minimum of 4 inches apart
  • Set the bulb in the hole with the pointy end up
  • After planting cover the bulb with soil and water thoroughly
  • Use the potting mix for bulb plantation are in the ratio : 1
  • Garden soil + Compost + Perlite + Sand (2:2:1:1) Soil + Cocopeat + vermicompost (2:1:2)
Tritonia Care
  • Water a plant when the soil feels dry to touch
  • Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering for the winter & rainy season
  • Try to water the plants in the morning around 8-10am
  • Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and throw in the garbage collector
  • Fertilize the plant during planting and growing season with organic fertilizer
  • Store the bulbs away from sunlight in a cool dry area and check regularly
  • Do not store bulbs for more time as they can loose their viability
